Lack of ongoing maintenance poses a serious threat to the sustainability of this servicing strategy with numerous studies highlighting that ~50% of on-site systems are not meeting performance expectations.

Whilst Local Government has regulatory oversight of on-site sewage management systems, there are other State Agencies with a direct interest in the performance of this infrastructure, namely Health Departments, Environmental Protection Agencies, Planning Departments and Catchment Managers.
